If your lower belly won’t budge, read this.

"My stomach is flat in the morning and looking five months pregnant by dinner. WHY!?" Some version of that lands in my DMs every week, so let's talk about it.

Not every midlife belly is body fat. Some of it is hormone changes through the menopause transition can shift where we store fat toward the middle, and we lose muscle as we age, so body composition changes even when the scale hasn't moved 10 pounds.

But if your stomach is flat at 7am and distended at 8pm, that isn't fat that showed up between breakfast and dinner. That's digestion, regularity, food volume, how fast you're eating, and whether you've been gripping your abs all day.

I'm not a doctor and I'm not diagnosing anyone.

What I do know is the fix is different for each one.

Fat responds to strength training, protein + fiber, daily movement and a deficit you can actually hold.

Distension responds to fiber, fluids and noticing which meals set it off.

More crunches and another HIIT class answer NEITHER.

So...what should you actually do about your lower belly?

Before you try to “get rid of it,” figure out what you're actually dealing with.

•If it's body fat: focus on nutrition, strength training, protein, movement and a sustainable calorie deficit.

•If it's bloating or distension: start looking at digestion, regularity, food patterns and meal habits.

•If you're constantly gripping or bracing your stomach: pay attention to your breathing, posture and how you're using your core.

•If you're exhausted, stressed and training seven days a week: adding another workout probably isn't step one.

And sometimes? It's a combination. That's why I don't believe there's one magical supplement, exercise or food that gets rid of a midlife belly.
